Strong words from the Irish Communications Minister Patrick O’Donovan recently…
It relates to the potential use of PPS number as part of the age verification onboarding process for any video sharing or social media platform that features potentially harmful content.
With potential push-back related to data privacy concerns to come…this one might take a while to get rolled out. However, the government seems to mean business when it comes to enforcing the regulations outlined in the new Online Safety Code launched last year…which is only further backed-up by the signing of a formal Memorandum of Understanding with Australia’s eSafety Commissioner in response to their outright ban of social media for u16’s.
It is just another in the long list of tools available to ensure compliance with the Online Safety Code such as Document checks, Biometrics, and Data-Driven API’s which will ensure companies have a robust age assurance process in place, and can easily avoid “doing things the hard way”.
But this shouldn’t really be just about compliance…it’s about doing the right thing…unless of course some organisations are of the same mindset as a certain multi-billionaire, social media owner with an AI plugin tool that Jimmy Saville would be proud of!
